Personal Illness/Personal Leave
Instructional Employees – School and Parish
Personal Illness
- At the beginning of each school/contract year, paid sick leave will be granted at the rate of seven (7) days per school year to all full-time teachers with one or more years of service. Teachers with less than one (1) year of service will earn sick leave of one (1) day per month which will not exceed seven (7) days through the remainder of the employment agreement. Principals, full-time DREs and CREs will earn one (1) day of sick leave per month for a total of twelve (12) per year, if employed for a full 12-month period. Part-time instructional employees who work a minimum of 20 hours per week are eligible for personal illness leave. Leave will be granted on a prorated basis (consistently applied based on total hours worked per week), equivalent to the rate of full-time teachers and principal, DREs, CREs.
- All unused sick days may be accumulated to a maximum of one hundred twenty (120) days. Employees are encouraged to accumulate sick days. In the event of total disability, either temporary or permanent, these accumulated days will be the extent of the employer’s obligation to provide paid leave.
- The use of sick days in excess of five (5) concurrent days must be substantiated by evidence of incapacity.
- Periods of medical incapacity associated with maternity shall be treated the same as any other illness or disability for purposes of receiving sick leave.
- Paid sick leave may be used for the illness of immediate family members. The term “family member” is defined as: member of the employee’s immediate family (spouse, domestic partner, child, stepchild, mother, father, brother, sister, grandparents, grandchild, in-laws in kind, stepparent, and employee’s guardian (if applicable).
- All unused accumulated sick days are transferable from one Catholic school/parish in the Diocese to another school/parish in the Diocese.
- Employees will not receive payment for unused sick days upon termination of employment or retirement.
- It is the responsibility of the principal/pastor, after consultation with the employee, to determine the amount of sick leave accumulated prior to the effective date of a new contract or start of a new year.
- If leave is subject to the Family and Medical Leave Act, please refer to the Family and Medical Leave (Diocesan Regulation 4151.1) for applicable procedures.
- Paid sick leave may not be used for leaves compensated by Workers’ Compensation.
Personal Days
In accordance with the Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act, employees must receive the applicable number of personal days as defined by the law.
- Full-Time teachers shall be entitled to five (5) personal days during the Contract Term, and personal days can be used for any reason. Personal days must be used during the Contract Term and are not paid out or carried forward at the end of a Contract Term or upon non-renewal. A Full-Time teacher will receive pay for any unused personal days if termination occurs prior to the end of the Contract Term. Part-time instructional employees are eligible for personal illness leave. Leave will be granted on a prorated basis (consistently applied based on total hours worked per week), equivalent to the rate of full-time teachers, principals, DREs and CREs.
- Full-time teachers and Part-time teachers have the option to convert up to three (3) personal days to sick days at the end of the Contract Term. This can only be done provided an employee is returning for another Contract Term. This is at the sole discretion of the teacher, and the teacher must make this request in writing prior to the end of the current school year. Failure to do so will result in the days being forfeited as described above. The employee understands that by converting personal days to sick days that the days are not compensable at time of termination.
Other Leave
- Eligible employees may be entitled to other leave which may be with or without pay. Full description of leave is defined in the Diocesan Regulation 4151.1.
