Responsibilities, Duties, Code of Ethics

Policy on proper conduct with Minors: Diocese of Belleville; coaches, teachers, volunteers. The following directives are to be followed. It is imperative that the following do not occur:

  • Be alone with anyone 18 years of age or younger, including in a car. If one-on-one interaction is necessary, it must take place in an area visible to others or with other appropriate safeguards; even with permission from a parent or guardian;
  • Enter a private space in use by a Minor (e.g., a single-occupancy restroom) without another adult present;
  • Invite a Minor into your private home or vehicle, boat, tent, with or without permission from a parent;
  • Do not participate in camping activities with Minors that are not with your children;
  • Communicate privately with a minor not your child or maintain private relationships through social media;
  • Take photos or videos of a Minor with a personal cell phone or camera. When used for school purposes photos should be deleted permanently.
  • Engage in any abusive or neglectful conduct;
  • Make inappropriate jokes;
  • Hit, physically assault, or inappropriately touch Minors;
  • Act in any way to shame, humiliate, belittle, or degrade Minors; or otherwise perpetrate any form of emotional abuse;
  • Use language, make suggestions, or offer advice, which is inappropriate, offensive, or abusive;
  • Behave in a sexually provocative manner;
  • Make sexual materials available in any form to Minors or help them access such materials;
  • Possess, use, or offer for use any type of weapon or explosive device;
  • Use, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs; or
  • Provide or offer alcohol or illegal drugs. If your job is to interact with Minors,
  • Have any direct electronic and or social media contact with Minors unless the contact is related to the program and another adult is included in the communication;
  • Initiate contact with a Minor outside of the program without contacting the Minor’s parent or guardian;
  • Sleep in the same room with a Minor, unless you are the Minor’s parent or guardian;
  • Give gifts to Minors independent of gifts provided by the program;
  • Use a personal vehicle to transport Minors; or
  • Provide or offer prescription or over-the-counter medication to a Minor unless the medication has been specifically authorized in writing by the parent or legal guardian and then keeping a log on what and when medication is given.
