Ministry of Presiding

Our Catholic people have an almost instinctive awareness that there is an intimate relationship between their Catholic life of faith and their regular participation in the Sunday Eucharist.  The Church, ever anxious to strengthen this intimate relationship, has a special pastoral concern for those who cannot attend Sunday Mass because a priest is not available.  Occasionally, the pastor or parish life coordinator needs to ask a deacon or layperson to preside at a Liturgy of the Word Service with the Communion Rite.

It is important that leaders of prayer be chosen thoughtfully and prayerfully.  They should be committed Catholics of deep personal faith, who live in fidelity to the teachings of the Church.  They should be held in high regard by their fellow parishioners.  The average person needs training in this liturgical art.  In order that our parishes have properly trained leaders of prayer, the Office of Worship has carefully prepared a program that will be a great help in providing the quality of presiders that we need in today's Church.

Seminar #1 - The Ministry of Presiding at Prayer for Deacons and Lay Leaders - Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest
This seminar is intended for deacons and lay leaders of prayer who may have the responsibility to lead public prayer such as Sunday Liturgy of the Word with Communion.  Participants must be recommended by their pastor or parish life coordinator.
The seminar consists of two study days and a practicum for competency in presiding at prayer.  The seminar includes teaching and demonstration of the skills of effective presiding, deepening the understanding of theological and liturgical issues and exploring the rite, Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest, at which lay leaders and deacons preside.  Participants who successfully complete the seminar and practicum are duly mandated to act in this ministry for a period of three years.

Participants will develop competency in:

  • the role of presiding and the qualities and skills of effective presiding
  • the language of public prayer and the use of gesture, ritual objects and liturgical space
  • the use and importance of posture, movement, and gesture in leading liturgical prayer
  • the writing of petitions and the structure of liturgical prayer

Seminar #2 - The Ministry of Presiding at Prayer for Deacons and Lay Leaders with a Focus on the Order of Christian Funerals

(Prerequisite:  The Ministry of Presiding at Prayer - Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest)
This seminar is intended for deacons and lay leaders who may have the responsibility to lead public prayer such as a Vigil for the Deceased or the Rite of Committal and have successfully completed Seminar #1.  This seminar is part of the on-going formation for those whose three year mandate is coming to an end.

Participants will develop competency in:

  • ministering to the dying, the dead and those who mourn
  • enacting the rites with dignity
  • organizing funerals in a context of pastoral care
  • recognizing that the whole parish shares in this awesome experience of the paschal mystery
