Objectives of the Instructional Program
The Religious and Faith Dimension of a Catholic School
Catholic schools in the Diocese of Belleville are to be effective vehicles of total Christian formation. The Catholic schools must teach the Catholic faith that comes to us from the Apostles. The task of our Catholic schools “is fundamentally a synthesis of culture and faith, and a synthesis of faith and life: The first is reached by integrating all the different aspects of human knowledge through the subjects taught in light of the Gospel; the second, in the growth of virtues characteristic of the Christian.” The Catholic School,The Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education, p. 37.
AThe Catholic school forms part of the saving mission of the Church, especially for education in the faith. It is not simply an institution which offers academic instruction of high quality, but, even more important, is an effective vehicle of total Christian formation.@ National Directory for Catechesis p.230.
Catholic schools must maintain an emphasis on its true and authentic purpose of total Catholic Christian formation. This requires religious instruction, a vibrant sacramental life, moral and spiritual formation, and opportunities for service and justice woven throughout the curriculum.
