Catechist Age Requirement

“From the earliest days of the Church, immediately following the apostles’ acceptance of Christ’s missionary mandate, catechists have made and continue to make an outstanding and absolutely necessary contribution to the spread of the faith and the Church by their great work.” (NDC p. 217)  Because the ministry of catechesis requires maturity, the requirement is that the catechist must be 21 years of age or over. A person younger than 21 can be a catechist assistant. Catechist assistants who are under 21 years of age may be in regular contact with children only if they are directly supervised by an adult who is in full compliance with the Diocesan Child Protection Policy and who is actually present at the time and place where they are serving.  Catechist assistants who are 18 years of age or older must also be in full compliance with the Diocesan Child Protection Policy.  Catechist Assistants under the age of 18 must receive training and be supervised by an adult.
