2430 Policy

Diocesan Board of Education
Diocese of Belleville
Policy 2430

Governance: Catholic High School , Elementary and Parish School of Religion

Every parish in the Diocese of Belleville shall have a catechetical commission or committee. “No single model of a representative commission, however, will be suited to every parish. Different circumstances in parishes require different organizational forms. In parishes that have established parish pastoral councils, the catechetical commission can be a committee of the parish pastoral council. Otherwise, it can take the form of a separate standing committee or some other entity. No matter what organizational form is chosen, the various education and catechetical components of a parish program of evangelization and pastoral care should be developed in harmony with one another and with the total program of pastoral care planned by the parish. (National Directory for Catechesis p. 255-256)”

In addition, every Catholic elementary and high school shall have a Board of Education. This board shall propose policy to the pastor for elementary schools and to the Bishop for high schools for ratification as well as ensure the monitoring of financing, stewardship, and marketing. The policies of this local board must be in accordance with those established by the Diocesan Board of Education.

Whether elected or appointed, the members of the parish catechetical commission or committee [and Board of Education when applicable] should represent the diversity in age, ability, and the cultural, racial, social, and economic conditions present in the parish. They should receive appropriate training and pastoral formation that help them understand the Church’s universal mission, the overall goals of the parish and the catechetical priorities within that pastoral plan. (National Directory for Catechesis p. 256)”
