Those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and
great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus." - Timothy 3:13
WHAT DO CATHOLIC DEACONS DO?
There are three dimensions of diaconal service:
Ministry of Charity and Justice,
Ministry of the Word of God, and
Ministry within the Liturgy.
Deacons care for the disenfranchised, the bereaved, the divorced, the imprisoned..all those members of the community isolated from society by sickness and poverty, crime or age. Deacons may prepare the faithful to receive the sacraments. With proper authorization they are to preach, teach, and give spiritual guidance. They baptize, witness marriages and preside at funerals. Whatever they do, deacons are acting on behalf of the servant Christ.
