Bishop Braxton Announces Appointments

His Excellency, The Most Rev. Edward K. Braxton, Ph.D., S.T.D., Bishop of Belleville, is pleased to announce the following clergy, religious, and lay appointments, effective Tuesday, July 14, 2015, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, unless otherwise indicated.

Retirement (canon 538§3)

His Excellency, The Most Rev. Stanley G. Schlarman, DD, Bishop-emeritus of Dodge City, Kansas, and generously serving as Vicar for Priests of the Diocese of Belleville for the last ten years, has been granted retirement status from his ministry as Vicar for Priests.

Ecclesiastical Notary (canon 483§1)

The Rev. Kenneth J. York, J.C.L., Pastor of St. Henry Parish in Belleville, is appointed Ecclesiastical Notary for the Diocese to assist the Rev. Msgr. John W. McEvilly, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia.

Priest Retirements (canon 538§3)

The Rev. Msgr. John W. McEvilly, V.G., until now, Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Belleville, and Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Diocese, is granted retirement status from his pastorate, while continuing as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia.

The Rev. Leo J. Hayes, until now, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Parish in Ava, St. Ann Parish in Raddle, and St. Joseph Parish in Willisville, is granted retirement status after 54 years of presbyteral ministry in the Diocese.

The Rev. Joseph L. Trapp, until now, Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Benton, is granted retirement status after 56 years of presbyteral ministry in the Diocese.

Pastors (canon 522)

The Rev. Msgr. Thomas D. Flach, V.F., is appointed to a second six-year term as Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Marion.

The Rev. Msgr. Dennis R. Schaefer is appointed to a second six-year term as Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Red Bud, while continuing as Pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Ruma.

The Rev. Thomas M. Barrett is appointed to a second six-year term as Pastor of St. Paul Parish in Vienna and St. Francis de Sales Parish in Stonefort.

The Rev. Matthew J. Elie, Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Belleville, is appointed Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Belleville, in accord with The Pastoral Plan for Parish Renewal and Restructuring.

The Rev. Gary P. Gummersheimer, Pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Murphysboro, is appointed Pastor of St. Elizabeth Parish in Ava and St. Ann Parish in Raddle, in accord with The Pastoral Plan for Parish Renewal and Restructuring.

The Rev. Federico C. Higuera is appointed to a second six-year term as Pastor of St. Mary Parish in Anna.

The Rev. Benjamin J. Stern, Pastor of St. Mary of the Divine Maternity Parish in Ellis Grove and Pastor of St. Boniface Parish in Evansville, is appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Willisville, in accord with The Pastoral Plan for Parish Renewal and Restructuring.

The Rev. Kenneth J. York, J.C.L., is appointed to a second six-year term as Pastor of St. Henry Parish in Belleville.

The Rev. Msgr. Kenneth J. Schaefer is appointed canonical pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Carterville.

Parochial Administrators (canon 539)

The Rev. Charles Anyaoku, a new fidei donum missionary on loan from His Excellency, The Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Onitsha, Nigeria, is appointed Administrator of St. Paul Parish in Johnston City, and to provide pastoral ministry at St. Joseph Parish in Marion and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Herrin. The Rev. Msgr. Thomas D. Flach, V.F., will serve as his mentor.

The Rev. Felix Chukwuma, a new fidei donum missionary priest on loan from His Excellency, The Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Onitsha, Nigeria, is appointed Administrator of St. Mary Parish in Valmeyer and Chaplain at Gibault Catholic High School in Waterloo. The Rev. Von C. Deeke will serve as his mentor.

The Rev. Urban Osuji, C.M., until now, Administrator of St. Mary Parish in Valmeyer and Chaplain at Gibault Catholic High School in Waterloo, is appointed Administrator of St. Joseph Parish in Benton, St. Andrew Parish in Christopher, and St. Mary Parish in Sesser, in accord with The Pastoral Plan for Parish Renewal and Restructuring.

The Rev. Linus Umoren, C.M., until now, Parochial Vicar at Holy Family Parish in Cahokia and Sacred Heart Parish in Dupo, is appointed Administrator of Holy Family Parish and Sacred Heart Parish. With this appointment, The Rev.
Msgr. Carl E. Scherrer, until now, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Dupo and The Rev. Msgr. Marvin A. Volk, until now, Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Cahokia are relieved of these additional pastorates.

Sacramental Minister (canon 517§2)

The Rev. Richard G. Mohr, retired, is appointed as Sacramental Minister at Holy Spirit Parish in Carterville.

Residence

The Rev. Nicholas G. Junker, Diocesan Vocations Director and Sacramental Minister at The Newman Catholic Student Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, is appointed to full-time residence at St. Francis Xavier Rectory in Carbondale.

Transitional Deacon Assignment (canon 274)

The Rev. Mr. Brett Judkins, newly-ordained, is appointed to provide diaconal ministry at Mary Help of Christians Parish in Chester, effective immediately.

Permanent Deacon (canon 274)

Deacon Douglas L. Boyer, until now, serving as Deacon at SS. Peter and Paul Parish in Waterloo, is appointed to serve as Deacon at St. Mary Parish in Belleville. Deacon Boyer is also appointed primary Master of Ceremonies to the Bishop for Sunday Liturgies at the Cathedral of St. Peter.

Parish Life Coordinators (canon 517§2)

Sr. Carol Karnitsky, S.C.C.M., Parish Life Coordinator at Holy Spirit Parish in Carterville, is appointed to that same ministry for a period of one year.

Sr. Grace Marie Mueller, S.S.N.D., Parish Life Coordinator at St. Luke Parish in Belleville, is appointed to that same ministry for a period of one year.

Sr. Diane Turner, S.S.N.D., Parish Life Coordinator at St. Felicitas Parish in Beaver Prairie, is appointed to that same ministry for a period of one year.

Mrs. Brenda Pehle, Parish Life Coordinator at St. Joseph Parish in Lebanon, is appointed to that same ministry for a period of one year.

Parish Life Coordinator Retirements (canon 517§2)

Sr. Catherine Wellinghoff, ASC, until now, Parish Life Coordinator of St. Paul Parish, Johnston City, is granted retirement status.

Deacon Robert G.H. Lippert, until now, Parish Life Coordinator at St. Anthony in Beckemeyer and St. Augustine Parish in Breese, is granted retirement status. He will continue to serve, for the present, as Deacon at both parishes.

The Bishop has made the following change in the Parish Partnerships:

St. Anthony Parish in Beckemeyer, until now, in a Parish Partnership with St. Mary Parish in Carlyle and St. Teresa Parish in Marydale is now joined to the Parish Partnership of St. Dominic Parish in Breese and St. Augustine Parish in Breese.

St. Mary Parish in Carlyle and St. Teresa Parish in Marydale remain a Parish Partnership.

Given from the Diocesan Curia on Friday, the 12th day of June, in the year of Our Lord 2015, the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
