Catechumenate (RCIA)

RCIA:  The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.  This is the title of the process designed to prepare adults for entrance into the Catholic Church by the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation.

The Office of Worship:

  • Supports parish catechumenate and initiation ministries,
  • Sponsors Christian Initiation (RCIA) leader and team formation programs,
  • Offers in-service and formation for Christian Initiation ministries, and
  • Plans and coordinates the annual Rite of Election ceremonies at the Cathedral of Saint Peter.

Annual RCIA Workshops

"Through the Doorway" offered on a Sunday in January.
"Wading Deeper" usually offered the last Friday/Saturday in July.

The Dioceses of Belleville and Springfield in Illinois will continue their collaborative efforts offering two RCIA workshops every year.  However, beginning in January, 2018 and unfolding into the year 2020, the emphasis will be "Year-Round Catechumenate" with a different and growing focus at each workshop.  This three-year plan will help pastors, liturgy committees, initiation teams, musicians, catechists and other ministers image, envision, understand and implement a year-round catechumenate in the parish.

Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion

In the Diocese of Belleville, on the first Sunday of Lent (February 18, 2018), we will celebrate the Rite of Election of Catechumens and the Call to Continuing Conversion of Candidates.  As you are aware, this rite is among the last steps the catechumens and candidates take before they pass through the waters of Baptism, are sealed with the Holy Spirit in Confirmation, and take their place at the Eucharistic table.  Like all of the liturgies of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, this rite is rich in meaning for all who take part in it.
