PARISH FAITH FORMATION (PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION);

Elementary Textbook Series

The following criteria were used to determine recommendations for primary textbook series for parish youth faith formation (Parish School of Religion) in the elementary school level.

  1. Conformity to the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  2. Quality teacher/catechist materials
  3. Excellence in materials for empowering parents as primary catechists
  4. Quality Website with student/young person, catechist/teacher, and parent materials
  5. Artwork and Lives of Saints which reflect the diversity of believers in the Catholic Church
  6. Use of the Fine Arts including painting and music for catechesis in the textbook and supplemental materials
  7. Excellence in providing and integrating prayer services, rituals, and sacramentals

Beginning in the 2012-2013 program year parish youth faith formation programs (PSR) shall use one of the approved grade school level (grades 1-6) religion book series.

Parish Faith Formation (Parish School of Religion):  High School Textbook Series

Parishes are currently free to continue using their current text.  The adoption of an approved text for Parish adolescent catechesis is not expected until the 2014-2015 program year.  Parishes and schools will not be mandated to adopt particular textbooks before August of 2014.

Parish and School Faith Formation (Parish School of Religion):  Pre-School-Kindergarten Textbook Series

Parishes and schools are currently free to continue using their current text.  The adoption of an approved text for Pre-School-Kindergarten is not expected until the 2013-2014 program/school year.  Parishes and schools will not be mandated to change textbooks before August of 2013.

Parish and School Faith Formation (Parish School of Religion):  Education in Human Sexuality Textbook Series

Parishes and schools shall use one of the approved texts for education in human sexuality.

Sacramental Formation:  Immediate Preparation for the Sacrament of  the Eucharist and Reconciliation (Parish and School)

Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year the following textbooks are approved for preparation of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

Sacramental Formation:  Immediate Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation (Parish and School)

Beginning in the 2011-2012 program/school year parishes and schools shall use one of the approved texts for immediate preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The approved series are:

School:  High School Textbooks

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year all textbooks used by each high school in its plan to implement the Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops November 2007) must be submitted to the Office of Education for examination and must be approved by the Bishop before use.
